The cake was beautiful and as advertised.

The price was fair also.

However we were handed a cake in 25 degree heat with no lid and told “store in a cold place.”

The cake was for party in a restaurant 15 mins away and only when we insisted a lid should be provided was one fashioned out of plastic bags. The staff insisted they never preseng a cake with a lid. This is very bizarre.

This really lets down your service.

The cake tasted really good! Please invest in some lids and some proper cake boxes!

After an afternoon escorting my gorgeous girlfriend around the shops in Athlone, and emerging several euro lighter and spiritually exhausted, I reached the inevitable conclusion. I needed caffeine. Urgently. And, seeing as we’d survived retail combat, a sweet treat felt not only justified but medically necessary.

So we ducked into Quigleys Café, Bakery and Deli like two weary travellers seeking refuge. The air was thick with the smell of fresh coffee and sugar, which is frankly one of humanity’s greatest achievements. Straight away the cake display caught my eye. Rows of glorious, unapologetic desserts sitting there like edible trophies, practically daring me to maintain any form of self control.

Now, I’m a big lad. Not subtle. And seating was… let’s say intimate. We squeezed in, and I suddenly became very aware that I was sharing close quarters with fellow patrons while staring down a slice of cake that I fully intended to demolish. There’s a delicate social dance involved in pretending you’re going to eat politely, when in reality your inner caveman is screaming.

The coffee arrived hot, strong, and deeply reassuring. Exactly the sort of cup that restarts your internal engine. Then came the cake. Soft, sweet, indulgent, and dangerously easy to inhale. I did my best to behave like a civilised adult while my girlfriend chatted away, but every bite was a small victory.

The only real gripe is the seating. It’s cosy to the point where you can feel the burning side glances as you enthusiastically work through your dessert like a man on a mission. But honestly, when the coffee is that good and the cake selection is that strong, dignity becomes optional.

A perfect little recharge stop. Tight seating, yes. Outstanding treats, absolutely. And I’d happily do it all again.

I have ordered christening theme cupcakes quite last minute. Was delighted to see availability was still there for our occasion that took place literally the same week. We got two boxes of 12 cupcakes (vanilla sponge with pink and white frosting) for a party of 15. The cakes disappeared within minutes. The sponge was so fresh. The frosting was light, creamy and not too sweet. I am happy to see the ever expanding catalogue of cakes and cupcakes designs with Quigleys. Ordering online was so easy and collection was fast and smooth. Our local Tullamore store closed a while back which we were sad to see.
